I've been saying for some time now to friends who would listen that George W. Bush is downright revolutionary in the way he is quietly dismantling decades' progress in environmental protection and other areas. I've been saying it, but not nearly as eloquently or knowledgeably as Drake Bennett and Heidi Pauken in this excellent piece in The American Prospect Online. When you step back and look at what the administration is doing in perspective, it is apparent that "It is a wholesale turning over to corporate America the governing of this country," says Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. (Quoted in the above article.)

Sometimes it's hard not to despair.

More recently, Michael Kinsley placed the economic aspect of the revolution in perspective here, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution succinctly describes the environmental side here.

The Democrats have got to get it right this time.  When I read stuff like this in The Liberal Oasis about the shananigans of the Democratic Leadership Council I get that sinking feeling . . . .
