My favorite democratic Blog Site, called DailyKos, is as guilty of jumping on the "of course he's guilty, he's from Alabama isn't he" bandwagon as any other - witness the revered DOSopedia entry for Alabama - Written no doubt when Marcos himself was authoritatively slinging the "crook" word around in reference to Siegleman without ever having met him or looked farther than the end of his nose. This is what works best in Alabama dirty tricks - just use the mere suggestion of impropriety and you'll succeed against almost any southern politician:
The governor of Alabama is Robert Renfroe "Bob" Riley. He was born in Ashland, Alabama on October 3, 1944. He is a Republican and is serving his first term, having defeated the unpopular and ethically challenged incumbent Democrat Don Siegelman in 2002. Siegelman was indicted on May 27, 2004, (and later convicted) along with his former chief of staff and one other person, of having illegally rigged bids for state medical contracts. Despite the rumors of ethical misdeeds, Siegelman almost beat Riley anyway, a testament to Alabamians' stubbornness and the power of the NRA endorsement that Siegelman was somehow able to secure in the final weeks of the campaign.
Now, obviously this needs to be both updated and corrected for the record. Are there some Kossacks out there who might take this on? I don't have time and I'm sure there are more energetic young Kossacks from Alabama who could do a fine job...
Eh?
And over in a wonderful blog called Left in Alabama they have a huge repository of Siegleman stories and you really should check this out.
