Matthew Yglesias has written a few posts like this one where he notes that what should be considered outrageous and irresponsible behavior is just so common in the Bush administration that the story seems commonplace. And, as he argues in another post:

I believe that it is very important to have a national conversation about the massive dishonesty of the president of the United States and the administration he leads. Nevertheless, one cannot write columns with headlines like: "Don't you see, the president is a liar!" week after week or else people will think you are a crank. Paul Krugman in particular experiences this problem.

No idea what in the hell to do about this: "Stupid Bush, you're a genius!" He's such a disaster that a through critique of him seems pointless. Perhaps people think that the US couldn't possibly have such incompetent leadership.

It might be easier if he were just moderately bad. There is a sort of political genius in being so unbelievably bad that you make people too afraid to believe you really are what you seem.

No, of course, I don't think that was really his plan. Bush just did a Homer.
