Kind of humbling too. Really, in yesterday's post, I was just trying to be funny. I'm not often that funny, mostly serious, sometimes sad and a lot of times, pissed off. I know that the personal details of my life can seem overwhelming and even depressing to others, including my friends, so I was just trying to lighten things up a bit.
I just didn't realize that it would be construed as whining. Really, I am actually a pretty happy person. I don't take that much for granted. I'm constantly blown away that I have such amazing friends, an incredible boyfriend, jobs that pay me to go to restaurants, spas, the Phillipines... Most of the time I feel undeserving of it all.
Okay, enough justification.
I'm writing this from my Dad's kitchen table in Orange Co. (do I dare make a crack about OC - best not to I suppose). I brought him home from the hospital last night and it was quite a scene. I pulled up to the curb outside the condo but he didn't have enough strength to get out of the car. It was kind of scary because, no matter how hard I tried, I just wasn't strong enough to pull him to his feet. I had one of those moments, where you kind of step back from the situation... Here I am, at 25, on a warm southern California evening, trying desperately to pull my 82 year old father from the car...and failing. I had to run and get one of his neighbors, who was so nice and came right out to help me get him into the house.
I'm going to be down here for a few days or longer helping him get back to his life. I have my laptop. I have a hundred travel magazine submissions to respond to. I have lots of books to read and lots of cooking to do. And I'm HAPPY about it - see no whining!
I also have butterflies in my stomach because I just sent an email full of interview questions to Rolf Potts the travel writer. He's living in Thailand right now, working on his second book. We're reviewing his first book in our magazine soon and I pitched an interview to go with it, which he graciously agreed to do (albeit through email). I'm sorry, but that's just hot! The guy is 32, working on his second book and living in Thailand. Ow!
