APB: Missing llamas

Lorenzo and Fernando are gone. Fernando may have lit out last night; I didn't see him all day, but he likes to wallow and can be hard to spot. Lorenzo cried alarm all morning but I never could see what he was alarmed about. I should have taken him seriously, but he's cried wolf so many times. Now he's gone, too, and I've scoured every inch of pasture. No sign. But I think I know what happened. A herd of domestic goats has been wandering feral in the neighborhood; I can hear them this evening in the willows along the creek. They must have spooked the llamas, who will jump the fence only when so spooked. Norris says he'll come over at 7 tomorrow morning and we'll do some tracking before I start making the rounds of the neighbors.

Keep your eyes peeled, folks. There's a reward.

This is another good thing about having moved west of the Warner Mountains and out of Surprise Valley--antelope. Specifically, pronghorns, which aren't true antelope, but their own unique species.

I snapped these from too far away as they grazed with a few deer in a pasture along Highway 395, on my way home from fetching the mail in Davis Creek. Poor camera, easily spooked antelope. There was only one buck in this herd of about 35.

Run away! run away!
