I become rich overnight (compare)

Since Sunday's storm, not only are the words pouring forth at last, but finally I have found the box containing my early efforts, the past writing I've been searching for (to prime the creative pump), and--so sweet--the little stack of index cards I wrote my dreams on for years and years--I found my dreams! I found my dreams!--they weren't lost after all.

Having been a newsweekly staffer (and occasional feature writer) for several years, and having admired the format so well that I once tried to start my own, I find this news kind of exciting:

"Monitoring Alternative Weeklies
A new website helps users easily keep up with the more than 125 alternative newsweeklies across the country.
By Jonathan Dube, MSNBC.com/CyberJournalist.net
[via CARR-L}

One of the fastest growing media forms over the past decade has been alternative weeklies. Packed with in-depth stories the mainstream media may not cover, they're a great source of story ideas, not to mention interesting reading. But with more than 125 newsweeklies available across the country, keeping an eye on all of them has been nearly impossible -- until now.

The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies launched a wonderful new website earlier this month, AltWeeklies.com (
http://www.altweeklies.com) , featuring the best stories from 125 weeklies, including L.A. Weekly, Phoenix New Times, Austin Chronicle, Creative Loafing (Atlanta), Boston Phoenix, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and The Village Voice.

Though the publications are weekly, the site is updated daily (Monday through Friday) with articles on everything from crime and politics reporting to sex and food.

In addition to scanning headlines on the front page and the main channels (Politics, Health & Science, Opinion, Movies, Books, Culture), you can easily browse for more specific subjects thanks to two nice features.

The left column of every page on the site features Hot Topics, quick links to the latest alternative media stories on a range of topics in the news, such as the conventions, the Iraq war, Swift Boat veterans, and same-sex marriage.

On the Browse Archives page
(http://www.altweeklies.com/gyrobase/AltWeeklies/BrowseArchives) you can dig even deeper, easily scanning headlines sorted by dozens of topics, from alternative medicine to race relations.

The advanced search page
(http://www.altweeklies.com/gyrobase/AltWeeklies/Search) is handy, too, though keep in mind that the site is still young so the articles don't go back very far. As more stories are posted and archived on the site over time, the search will become even more valuable.

When I Met My Muse
by William Stafford

I glanced at her and took my glasses
off--they were still singing. They buzzed
like a locust on the coffee table and then
ceased. Her voice belled forth, and the
sunlight bent. I felt the ceiling arch, and
knew that the nails up there took a new grip
on whatever they touched. "I am your own
way of looking at things," she said. "When
you allow me to live with you, every
glance at the world around you will be
a sort of salvation." And I took her hand.

The sunlight is so clear this morning, so bright. It strikes the frost on the grasses and makes them into glass needles that stitch above to below. My love is hanging gates today to keep the sheep from wandering off some ranch. He's been awake since 4am. My love can't sleep, just like me, except that since I learned that about him I've slept sound as a child. He can be the insomniac, I suppose some selfish part of me reasoned. I don't have to do it anymore.
