Soundtrack: * fly buzzes * car passes on blacktop far below * wind passes around stones and between grasses * Townsend's solitaire, a small brown thrush, repeats its many-noted territorial song * dry remnants of mule's-ears rattle in the breeze * migrating sandhill cranes call and warble from an altitude so great they can't be seen * locusts clack and clatter flapping up from between stones ![]() Hike-mate leads the way; ugh--are you kidding me?
