Fresh black figs today with the morning coffee. Not many beans left in the jar. It may be time again to cut caffeine from the food budget. Start shrinking my one small daily cup until it's just a token swallow to ward off headache. And then voila I'll be addiction-free once more.

Words do not flow, particularly, behind fractured sleep, and recent nights have been badly segmented. Yoda's 2am demands for whatever it is he thinks he wants, the other cats' leaping at moths drawn to moon-illuminated white paper window shades, the pet-sat dog's 4am bursting bladder. Perhaps it can all be chalked up to full moon week. I'll have to make a graph...

Last night's early bedtime had me sitting up with a start just as consciousness finally faded, wide awake at midnight, several nagging dilemmas finally and firmly resolved. I love it when that happens. Then followed the hours of hot milk, Google, an outline solidifying on the page, fresh teleutons for a stale sestina.

Looks like my side's rising on the insomnia seesaw. We pinned my friend's sleeplessness on apnea, the worst I've ever witnessed in a napping man--fully 15 seconds of stopped breathing for every two breaths taken and he never even knew it--and since he's found ways at home to prevent this he sleeps very well for the first time in years, he says, and even remembers his dreams.

So I'm free to pace the night away once more. It's not such a bad thing from time to time.
