This day is brilliant and beautiful. The sky is so blue it hurts to look at it. High cirrostratus clouds spreading rapidly up from the south. The air moving through the trees makes a sound like heavy machinery you can feel in the ground. The rigid junipers, usually motionless, move now with a hallucinatory slowness, their limbs signing all at once in many directions like Kurosawa's menacing forest in Throne of Blood, only green here, not black-and-white, and benevolent.

I went out to look for a dandelion for Gunter. They're still green under the snow where they grow along the house foundation. These are supreme treats, like chocolate truffles, to a SAD tortoise. All day he glowers in his closet, splayed in front of the space heater, basking under his lamp, and doesn't move. I hope his African desert dreams warm his spirit, at least.
