Wednesday we drove the little Isuzu pickup into town. We mailed our boxes. We picked up some things at the hardware store. Then as I unlocked the passenger-side door for my brother, the key snapped off deep in the lock.
The ex-housemate had extras. And I have many copies of all my other keys. But for this truck, which hadn't run for two-plus years when we finally got it going last November, I have no copies.
I realized this just as the key snapped in two.
So a friend gave us a ride home. And I have ransacked the house. But no key is to hand. And I thought it would be easy to drive the Aerostar back in today to take care of all this, but then it snowed and snowed. And the pickup is my 4-wheel-drive, and it ain't here.
It's begun melting on the road. That's a relief. We'll give it a try. The locksmith opens at 10am, according to the Yellow Pages ad. If I can get the Aerostar into town, I can leave it at my mechanic's place to have its brakes worked on and bring the Isuzu home. Maybe.
(Both cars are pre-1990, just so we're clear on how I have two vehicles in the first place. Making monthly car payments never has been a goal of mine. Or, you know, a possibility, even.)
