Brother and dogs and I just came in from lengthy walkabout. Lorenzo Llama was coughing this morning. Off and on for a long time. This can't be a good thing. So we made a pilgrimage, the four of us, and walked around to the pasture and gave oats to Lorenzo and Fernando, who were very happy to see us there. I don't usually offer much grain to the llamas in hot weather. It's a winter treat. But it's been a long time since they had any, and it's like handing out candy--good for morale, & good public relations.
Then Brian and I continued across the pasture and under the fence and on to where a large plastic garbage can with bungie'd-on lid lay wedged firm in the willows and wild roses. It was my hay container, my feed supply I kept in the pasture. It was washed away in the great flood of ought-five. So Brian and I un-wedged it and pulled it out and stood it up for later retrieval. We continued downstream. I was searching for the two very large very heavy very expensive indestructible black rubber grain-feed bowls I used in the pasture, which also washed away in the flood. No success. Guess I'll have to invest in two more.
While we were wandering through the shoulder-high grasses we came to a teasel patch and I pulled up a huge armful of last year's spent teasels to take home. They look good bound with hemp twine as an item of indoor-outdoor decor... and I suppose for carding llama wool when I feel Creatively Anachronistic.
I suppose it's too late but I'm doin' it anyway: I go now to fill a long wooden planter with soil and presoaked moonflower seeds. I hope they have time to vine up and blossom on the greenhouse before winter comes; I'd love to have moonflower photos to post here someday!
