CATFRIDAY Piff left her sickbed this evening, descended the stairs, and graced us with her presence. Here she is, arrayed in all her piffy glory, a far cry from the bedraggled creature we've been wringing our hands over all week. She's pulled through in a big way, and her sister Ruth, in orange, appears to be pretty happy about that.

I gave up trying to find a cat to photograph for Friday, so I took the herbwalk-down-memory-lane, below, because I'm feeling a little addled and nostalgic today after a bad night. As the photos upstreamed to feral, though, Greta appeared and flopped down on a step next to me and seemed to say "go for it."

From the archives: Piff comes in out of the rain.
Ruth, Ted, and Grace were asleep for the night. Piff was late coming in and got caught in the rain. Her long fur was soaked when she finally joined the crew on the squeaky old bed. Grace had a good stretch, and then she helped Piff dry off.

Just now I was shutting everything down for the night when I noticed a movement among the desk papers and looked over to see this guy taking up his post. I was going to take him outside, but then I realized he probably comes here every night and feasts on gnats and little moths, because I leave my desk lamp on.

Moments ago I dashed out to find Greta, who likes to lurk in the tall grass in the early morning, to take her photo for Cat Friday. As my Secret Cat, she is too rarely celebrated here. But when I called her, Leo strode up, as well. They shared a moment, but Greta is just not one of his genetic colony, and must stand alone. In the last photo she spots her nemesis Ted. He alone of the others persecutes her. He is the alpha male, defender of the clan--or he thinks he is; he is the Dubya of the group. Just after I took the third picture Greta disappeared back into the grass.

GRACELESS

I was never that close to Gracie, but I felt a lot of respect for her. She was a swaggerer, a confident hunter, independent, somewhat aloof but always receptive to affection. She lived with her claws extended, ready for anything, and was the fiercest, strongest mother I know. She was mother to Ted and Leo, daughter of Ruth. Let us hope Ruth sticks close to home: Graceless is one thing; Ruthless is another.

Dappled, well-camouflaged. She had a golden disk on her forehead, as many cats do, but hers was special, and was one reason I named her Grace.

Grace stares into the camera from her favorite in-basket bed. Her lout of a son, Ted, lies to the left; her diminutive mother Ruth lies right.
