Trent Lott stepped up to the plate for Amtrak today. He and three other senators argued against the proposed break-up by the Bush administration. This plan would split Amtrak and give control of the railways to the states.
Oh boy, another capital idea from the "Bush League"! This is right up there with their idea that global warming hasn't been proven. Amtrak is a national rail service - if you break it up by state, you break the network and make it harder for passengers to travel.
Now I know Amtrak does have its problems: not many people travel by train anymore, it has a bad public image (remember Dave Letterman's Amtrak - Look out! slogan?), and it's desperate for money. They've twice threatened to pull out here unless they got more money. But it does provide a valuable service. Beats the heck out of taking the bus too.
If you're considering a trip in the near future, you could certainly do worse than to leave the car at home and take the train instead. It's cheap and believe it or not, safer than your car!
