Today I voted over in my neighborhood community center. There weren't a lot of people there; possibly only five or six of us, not counting the election workers. One of our election workers was wondering aloud why this election wasn't that popular. Sure, it might have only been a mayoral primary, but it was rather exciting for a mere mayoral race.
We had a first here - our first transgendered candidate. One might figure that would bring in interest groups pro or con - but no. Voting was probably about as busy as the pollsters predicted. In a way, that's sort of good news. It's not good that people didn't show up. But it is good that some lynch mob didn't show up to yell out anti-transgendered (and in this area, probably homophobic) chants at the voters.
We've only just begun to realize that as humans, we are all family. What affects one of us can affect all of us. It's not the fifties anymore, no matter how much Georgie and his right wing buddies try to pretend it is. Things are so much different now - and definitely for the better.
