Those of you who've had to sit tight through the Big Blackout know that Spence Abraham is the current Energy Secretary.  You're probably saying to yourself, "who is this idiot and why was he appointed?"  Well, I am happy to answer both your questions.

Abraham is a former congressman from Michigan.  He was elected in a close race in the early nineties.  I can't remember the year; all I remember is voting against him (I thought he was a creep even then).  I also remember telling my housemate "You'll be sorry."  Which he was, not too much longer after that.

Abraham made a lot of boneheaded decisions while in the state congress.  His pet projects were mostly transportation legislation.   He made the mistake of running for Senate against a vastly superior candidate, Debbie Stabenow.  Stabenow completely trounced him, and sent him packing to the state GOP heads in Grand Rapids.  We thought we'd seen the last of that goofball.

I personally was quite surprised to hear that Abraham had been appointed Energy Secretary, as he knows nothing about energy policy.  (Unfortunately, I can't find that great Onion story "Spence Abraham disappointed by Energy Secretary appointment"  where he laments that he wanted to be appointed Transportation Secretary, because he actually worked on that.)  Apparently he did a lot of brown-nosing within the party, and in return for his years of loyal bootlicking service, they threw him a bone.  I will say he does make a great toady and obfuscator.  (A must in this administration.)

So next time the electricity goes off, think of it as one of George Bush's prayer-based programs.  Get down on your knees and pray if you want your power, because with Abraham at the helm, we're in trouble.  Say "amen" and pass the generator.
