Update on the University of Michigan "How to be gay" class story:   Michigan House of Representatives member Jacob "Jack" Hoogendyk has announced today that he is working on a bill which would force public universities to turn over their class lists to the legislature on a yearly basis.  The House and Senate could block the university from teaching any course that they find "objectionable," with the university at risk of losing much-needed funding.  The university is remaining quiet on the issue, but in a statement said that "the freedom to pursue provacative subjects is a hallmark of higher education."

If this actually passes this time around (last time it was up for a vote, it lost by a ridiculously slim margin), what's going to be cut out of the curriculum next?  Women's studies?  Evolution?  Social stratification?  The possibilities are frighteningly endless.  College is usually the place to go to get that pap they taught you in K-12 out of your head.  Now the only thing that may be left is more of that watered-down pap.

Hit parade:   It's funny....I got a referer hit from a Google search on the"how to be gay" class story.  The unfunny thing is that on the page it was about even, pro and con.  I even found this refreshingly disgusting link at something called NewsMax.com.  Here's a little teaser:

"I had to agree with (Gary) Glenn [head of the American Family Association, who lodged the original complaint with the House] that the university seemed to be positioning itself as an avenue of authentication for the homosexual lifestyle. After all, if the gay lifestyle is actively encouraged at one of our largest state universities, how far out of the mainstream can it be?"

The author goes on to admit that he's been to a gay bar "with some friends," but claims this is very different from having your professor take you there.  Did this guy even go to college?  It's fairly common for professors and undergrads (especially seniors) to go to the bar together, hang out, and talk about classwork.  What's the difference between a gay and a straight bar?  What, has it never crossed your tiny little mind that gays, lesbians, and bisexuals are humans too?  Between this and "Energy Secretary" Spence Abraham, it's been a lousy week here in Michigan.
