How's this for an interesting demographic? We Americans sure love our cars, don't we? We enjoy them so much we paved over farmlands and wild areas and built houses that are out in the middle of nowhere. And they have no sidewalks, lest you get the idea in your head to walk somewhere.
If you read a little further down, it says that the average American makes around four trips per day, of which nearly half are for running errands or going shopping. Of course, they usually take the car.
What do you think might happen if they were encouraged to walk during at least one of these trips? A suburb could be retooled to include nice wide sidewalks, bike trails, maybe even with blocks that are more city-like (ie, square and smaller, not those irritating big loops that go nowhere). More exercise, more healthy people, less pollution, and maybe even some community building! It would be amazing, wouldn't it?
