Do you ever wonder if your eyes are playing tricks on you? It's not your eyes - its the way your brain is interpreting the information.
I'm guessing that most of you out there are familar with the Muller-Lyer Illusion. What you might not know is why people don't think the lines are of equal size. It's cultural bias. We are taught to see in perspective. We read converging lines as depth, so we think that the line with the outgoing lines is larger. We also live in boxes.
Some African tribes are much less susceptible to the illusion. For example, the Zulus, who live in round houses and plow their fields in a circular pattern, usually see that the lines are the same length. Nor do they read lines like we do, because their art has much more to do with ritual and spirituality than our outward looking society.
