State Senator Jack Hoogendyk, who you might remember from one of my earlier entries, has publicly released a list of classes at Michigan's public universities that he believes deserve further scrutiny. He believes that the legislature should be able to remove "objectionable" classes from the university curricula, or to take away funding from those that refuse to stop teaching these courses.
Now, this whole flap started with the University of Michigan's "How to be gay" class controversy. The full title of the class mentions the word "initiation," which was taken the wrong way by a bunch of rednecks up in Midland. (If society would let them just live a normal life instead of trying to shove them back in the closet at every opportunity, then being gay wouldn't be like being in a secret club, with a need for security.)
There are twenty other classes statewide that made Hoogendyk's "naughty list," including six of the classes at the neighboring institution, Michigan State University. Most of MSU's classes on the list deal with sexuality in one form or another. (What...humans have sex?! Well, there's no need to talk about that, now is there?)
Of course, befitting his status as a Republican senator, his list smacks of hypocracy. Of all the universities on his list, there are only two universities avoiding this fate. One of them, Western Michigan University, isn't on his list, even though the same kinds of classes are taught there. Yep, you guessed it, WMU is in his district. (You know the old saying: dogs don't crap where they sleep.)
