Here's something interesting: One of the guys who runs the Lansing Sucks website might be invited to participate in a Cool Cities Forum in the mayor's office. If chosen, he would also be helping to advise the governor on just what makes a city cool. He's asked for advice about what we residents think would be cool, what's there that we already like, and what we don't like.
One of the things I don't like about downtown is that on nights and weekends, there aren't a lot of people around. Most places close up before the state workers go home at night. When we were at the Capitol about a month ago to take pictures for my Sculpture Wars essay, for the most part, we were alone. I felt like the Omega woman. It was rather unsettling.
Most of my ideas boil down simply to "less office buildings, more cultural areas." I don't want a Disney-fication of Lansing, though, so this will have to be a very careful effort. It's bad enough we had those damned bronze sculptures haunting our Twilight zone for two summers. If they come back again this year, I swear I'm having a performance art flash mob.
