(I'd like to thank Phil for the name of today's post.)
Today was the day. A day that many have been waiting for. The pilgrims came from miles around to participate. In this football crazed state, games don't come any bigger or with more baggage than the University of Michigan vs. Michigan State. It's less of a game than some sort of weird tribal warfare. There are some fans who would do anything to sit in the stadium today - including shelling out a couple months' salary (apparently tickets were being scalped on E-bay for a couple grand a pair).
Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong part of the country, because I hate football. I hear about all this hoohah surrounding the game and it makes me livid. (Instead of buying thousand dollar football tickets, why don't you donate your money to the scholarship programs, the museums, or the library?) Not only do they come and destroy the campus, they make it nearly impossible to get anywhere in town. There are thousands of drunken students and alumni roaming through the streets of East Lansing with something to prove (if their team lost) or something to celebrate (if their team won). This is a potentially dangerous combination that leads to all sorts of bad "drunken logic" decisions and occasionally a riot.
Tonight, the city seems fairly quiet. I don't hear sirens yet. Maybe cars won't be set on fire tonight. That's really the best an agnostic in Mecca can hope for.
