[I'm a little late on this - I apologize as my class seems to be cutting into my blogging time.]
The Lansing mayoral race was interesting this year. We had two good candidates running, Tony Benevides and Virg Bernero. (Benevides was interim mayor and a long-time city council member; Bernero served on the county commission and is now a state senator.) Both of them promised to uphold the former mayor David Hollister's committment to reinvigorating the city. (Hollister, if you're curious, is working with the governor now.) For the voters, it came down to a basic choice: Benevides's experience or Bernero's vision.
The race was a real cliffhanger. The two candidates were within 2 percentage points of each other. Benevides won, becoming the first Hispanic mayor of a capitol city (at least that's what they said on the radio). Even though there was some campaign mudslinging, once the votes had been tallied, they reached out to one another and pledged to work together for the future of Lansing.
We're sure going to need them to. Look around. Not many people are moving here. Young adults are moving south and west where the jobs are, leaving the Midwest behind. We need everybody to work together to make this an exciting and dynamic place to live. Here's hoping that the Benevides/Bernero partnership is fruitful.
