I don't know why people say that The Simpsons is still firing on all eight cylinders. At least the last two (or three) seasons, there really hasn't been any outstanding episodes. Actually, there really hasn't even been any good episodes.....I know, I know, the show is getting old - it's been on for thirteen years now.
I have contemplated just not watching it anymore. Tonight's episode has certainly added fuel to that fire. It was a parody of "Evita," with Lisa being elected school president. I think the only time I laughed was Willy's joke at Milhouse's expense. I only watched it because I knew Michael Moore was going to be on (his bit did make me giggle slightly). Unfortunately, Moore was on for all of about 10 seconds. The whole episode left me disappointed.
It makes me a little sad though. I've been watching the show since it's been on the air (except for the year I didn't own a television). I still like watching the old episodes in syndication, and I've thought about picking up the DVD sets for seasons 1-3. This is the longest I've watched any show. It's become a habit. I almost hate to stop watching, but if they're going to keep making bad, painful episodes, I will.
I remember a joke in one of the earlier seasons (it seems like it was Season one but I'm not quite sure) where Bart and Homer are watching tv. There's a nod to their worthy ratings opponent, The Cosby Show (when the Simpsons first started, they were on Thursday nights opposite Cosby), and Bart makes a comment to Homer that if he had a tv show, he'd keep making episodes until they ran the show into the ground. They've started doing that.
On the other hand, I hate to have them cancel the show now. I think if they can keep it going for another seven years, they'll be tied for longest-running prime time tv show. Do you know what the longest running prime time tv show is? Cheers? Nope. M*A*S*H? Nope. It's Gunsmoke. I have to admit that I'd get a perverse pleasure in seeing The Simpsons beat Gunsmoke.
