I've come to the realization that the person I share my office with is a fundamentalist.  I heard her telling a friend on the phone that her husband was "King James all the way."  I have to bite my tongue when I hear her making what could be construed as anti-gay comments (not that I've really heard much of that) or how she believes that women should be submissive to their husbands.

I, of course, don't believe any of it.  The last time I was in a church, it was for a wedding about five years ago.  I'm agnostic.  I have had friends in the past who were gay, lesbian, and bisexual.  I've spent over five happy years living with Sweetie, yet we don't have any desire to get married and have kids.  (We prefer our lives as they are....quiet and peaceful, thank you.)  We both work, but if I made enough money, he'd stay home.

In spite of this gulf of differences, we get along rather well.  We do have rather similar temperments.  It may sound a little weird, but we have things in common.  She's hip to environmentalism.  We both like to plant gardens.  When I talk about doing popular culture studies, she gets it.  (Sweetie doesn't, and he's a lot younger than she is.  Are men at any age just more "conservative"?)  She's a very nice lady, and I'm glad we ended up sharing the same office.  We were able to discover the common ground between us.  I only wish that someday liberals and conservatives can do the same.
