I've been hearing all about the Atkins Diet. Apparently, it's all the rage. Eat all the red meat, butter, and cheese - but stay away from bread, potatoes, and fruit. Most vegetables too. Now, I've been somewhat dubious of this plan. How can this be healthy? (The only reason to eat like this before Atkins came along was if you were diabetic.) A lot of people went on this diet, and were happy with the results (at least until they started incorporating starches and fruits back into their meals and gained it all back).
Now studies are coming out that say that the Atkins Diet causes heart disease and cholesterol buildup in the arteries. People are surprised by this. Why? In the 80's, you couldn't turn around without hearing something bad about eating red meat, whole milk, or other dairy products. (Eggs too.) Of course, other studies have come out saying that eggs, for example, aren't quite as bad as they thought. And margarine is worse for you than butter.
The real problem is that it's not what kinds of food we eat or don't eat, but how much we eat. Also a big factor in the equation is excercise (or lack of it). We lack self-control and patience. We want instant results. However, we are sorely disappointed when we climb on our scales. Weight loss (or weight maintenence for the thin) is an uphill battle. There are no quick fixes.
