For a couple without kids, Sweetie and I have quite a bit of kid-friendly junk. For example, I have a large bin of Lego bricks stashed in my closet. I used to play with them quite a bit, actually. I remember during orientation that our lecturer said that if we get stuck in our writing, we should go do something physical, like take a walk or do a craft. She liked to make baskets. I found that Lego building served a similar purpose.
Or, let's take movies. We're going to go watch The Grinch in a little while. My favorite Christmas special is the Charlie Brown Christmas (even though I'm agnostic, I can really relate to good ol' Chuck). Sweetie has just gotten the Schoolhouse Rock DVD. Great - now I'll have "Conjunction Junction" and "Interplanet Janet" stuck in my head all night - damn you Bob Dorough!
Certain experts have said that "Generation X-ers" (I still hate that term) miss their childhoods. That's why they collect toys or re-watch cartoons. Are we hiding in the past from our own future? Is ours a misplaced nostalgia? I don't think that's entirely the case. There are some things that are just that good (like the first two Charlie Brown specials). You're being nostalgic though if you start craving Dolly Madison though. (Make mine a raspberry Zinger....)
