According to this article at Yahoo, there's a widening political gender gap. Men skew Republican; women skew Democratic. Education makes a difference too, also serving to widen the gap for the most part. Here's the breakdown:
Education level: Gender gap (%):
High School or below 10 Some college 15 Bachelors degree 20 Postgraduate 28
The same study also shows that as education and income rise, men move towards the G.O.P., as do some women. The most interesting thing is that once men and women reach the higher ranges of postgraduate education, both lean Democratic. Given as a reason for the split is that men tend to think of their own personal situation, and women tend to think of the national situation.
Hmmm.....this really doesn't surprise me. I know plenty of people who could have been inserted into this article without a loss of coherence. Sweetie and I could have been in this article. He voted for Engler (I try not to hold that against him - but if I find out he voted for Spence Abraham, we'll have to have a little talk....). I couldn't wait for Engler to get his cold, flabby body out of office.
I couldn't really tell you why he's conservative, but I can tell you why I'm a liberal:
1) I come from a line of working class Democrats.
2) My family was one of the statistics barely managing to scrape by in the Reagan years.
3) I never would have been able to afford college without such "liberal pork barrel" programs as Pell grants, need-based scholarships, and Work-study.
4) There are more people in a situation that was similar to mine once (or worse) than you know
