Vote 2004

Drug WarRant is providing strategies for the 2004 election that can make a difference on drug policy reform. Most of the focus is on House races, with the goal of tipping the balance on such issues as not interfering with the states when it comes to medical marijuana, repealing the HEA drug provision, reducing the drug war support in Colombia, etc. In many of these areas, a few small races could make a difference.

Recommendations have been made entirely on what's best for drug policy reform, and not any other issues. Endorsements have also been made regardless of party affiliation.

If you came here through a search engine and you're not sure why you should pick a candidate based on their views on drug policy, here are some quick guides:

Drug WarRant Featured Race

Drug WarRant also has a featured race (and may add a couple more). I'm asking the readers to do everything they can to make a difference in key races. Volunteer, donate, etc.

A picture named rennerhouse.gif

The first featured race is Illinois 11. It is a competitive race, with a real chance of removing Weller and replacing him with someone clearly on our side. Renner is losing, but has been consistently closing the gap. Weller has voted in lock step with his friend (and drug warrior) Mark Souder. He's voted against the Hinchey amendment twice (which would have prevented the feds from interfering with states on medical marijuana), and has spoken out to support increased funding for the drug war in Colombia.

Tari (pronounced "Terry") Renner is in favor of medical marijuana and decriminalizing marijuana -- a clear change. Senator Durbin strongly supports Renner (and Durbin has been a friend to drug policy reform).

Also, Weller lied about this site and the endorsement in order to slander his opponent. He does not deserve to be in office.

If you support prohibition,
you are part of the drug problem.

Presidential Endorsement

With a detailed look at the two main party candidates and three of the third party candidates, Drug WarRant has the detailed analysis and endorsement for you.

State Voting Guides

Detailed guides with information on Senate races, and each U.S. House district plus endorsements when there's enough information available.

I'm adding additional states as quickly as possible. Check back all the way up to election day if your state isn't here yet.

If you have additional information or corrections to add on any race that I'm profiling, please let me know.

Marijuana Initiatives

Montana:
box Vote YES on I-148 to protect medical marijuana patients and their doctors from arrest and prosecution.

Oregon:
box Vote YES on Measure 33, which establishes marijuana dispensaries for patients and caregivers and increases the limit for patients.
Alaska:
box Vote YES on Ballot Measure 2, which would legalize and regulate marijuana for personal use by adults.

Candidate Responses:

Al Barger, Indiana Senate candidate writes:

Thanks for your endorsement for US Senate. Let me re-iterate that not only do I think the drug war is a bad idea, it is also flatly unconstitutional. As a candidate for federal office, there is absolutely NO authority under the US Constitution for the federal government to outlaw or regulate drugs. None.
Another note:
Thanks for the endorsement! Kevin Fleming Indiana District 4
And Jerry Kohn (Illinois Senate candidate) writes:
Pete,
Thanks for the endorsement on your blog.  Perhaps in years to come, we will be able to convince more and more people of the insanity of the "war on drugs".  Our children will look back on the "war on drugs" era in the same way that our generation looks on the era of alcohol prohibition in the 1920's - as a foolish mistake not to be repeated.  Thanks again.

I'm always happy to hear from the candidates or their staff. Feel free to expand on (or correct) any information I've presented.
