STILL TOPS IN GOOGLE CENSORSHIP!

  Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Daddy Loves You, Don't Tell You think we have a liberal media? I can't find a mention of this in anything but the blogs right now...and readers of this cartoon know that I prefer quoting "legitimate" news sources, not because I personally distrust the blogs, but because I wish to cut potential criticism off at the knees that I'm making stuff up or wallowing in rumor. Fortunately, The Guardian in the UK managed to cover Bill Napoli's comments: South Dakota outlaws abortion

Here's the Napoli part:

And the Republican senator Bill Napoli said on the US TV channel PBS that most abortions were being carried out for "convenience". He insisted, however, that exceptions could be made for rape or incest under a provision that protects the mother's life.

"A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged," he said. "The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalised and raped, sodomised as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life."

Thanks for being so caring, Bill. You sure you shouldn't throw in a little torture and maybe a bit of bestiality as well? We don't want to make it too easy on the girl...

However, while I'm on women's issues, there's another topic I'd like to mention. While I was at the NY Comic Con, Gloria Steinem addressed the issue of caregiving and how in the US, caregiving is an uncompensated occupation. TR Rose Associates have published a comic book, addressing this important subject in a very entertaining way, "The Adventures of Carrie Giver: The Cost of Caring." The book is conceived and written by TR Rose Associates, Inc., drawn by Eduardo Savid, one of the premier cartoon artists of today, with the collaboration of the great comic book artist Neal Adams, with cover art by Neal. It highlights the adventures of Carrie Giver, "our super-hero, and Carrie Miller, her alter-ego, [battling] everyday prejudices and [saving] people from life-altering hazards of chance or circumstance." The book focuses on the social, economic and political value in women's (AND men's) unpaid caregiving labor and in getting support for it. Children are part of the wealth of this nation. Shouldn't the caregivers be given support for the development of this resource? Right now, many people in the US wish to restrict the choice of a woman to decide for herself whether or not to have a child, but these same people pay little attention to whether or not a woman can have a child and then raise it in circumstances where the woman and her child are not forced into poverty, circumstances which are harmful to the welfare of both the mother and her child. Anyway, buy this book. Write to TR Rose Associates at tfuni@trroseassociates.com, or you may purchase it directly through Neal Adams' website or Midtown Comics.
