Busy, busy...
My apologies to those of you who check this site regularly. When I get busy, my life gets awfully boring. You don't want to know. And then there's the lawn.
I watched "Something's Gotta Give" (who came up with that title?) the other night, which, while not spectacular film making, I thought was entertaining with some nice performances. And listening a little to the commentary by Jack Nicholson on his thoughts and technique in creating this character was fascinating, particularly since he got some grief about just playing himself.
I also finally read "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman, which my wife and son had been pestering me about for a couple of years, and so now I've rented the BBC series based on the book (thank you, NetFlix).
And I've been reading "Terror and Liberalism" by Paul Berman, which is intriguing and inspiring me to write something actually thoughtful, which might be a stretch.
(For those of you whose knees are starting to jerk, the term "liberalism" refers to our Western society, and nothing Ann Coulter could object to, although she could probably find something if she really wanted to; liberalism as opposed to totalitarianism, I mean).
Probably the most interesting thing that's happened in the past few weeeks happened to my daughter. She was at a voice lesson and her professor decided to show her a videotape of a production of "Midsummer's Night Dream" from three decades ago, when he was a student at UNT. Beth and another student made fun of him, with his weird beard and chubbiness and dumb costume.
"At least I had a costume," he said, and then Titania appeared, dressed in sort of a mesh bikini thing.
Beth was mortified. Not because she's a prude, but because the actress was, in fact, her mother.
I love that story.
More later...
