Guest Blogger #8
Today's scheduled guest blogger is traveling this weekend and apparently having some difficulty getting Internet access, and since it's already 9 a.m. on the west coast, noon on the east, and I don't know what in Sweden (maybe August), I'll just do a little re-scheduling.
And it's appropriate, maybe, to have Michael Main on a Sunday. Michael attends Covenant Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas, and he often writes in his blog, The Main Point, about his Sundays. And we get other days, usually every day, stories of his journey. He makes discoveries, Michael does, along the way, coins he finds on his daily walks, odd stories he comes across in his job as a radio news personality, people he finds interesting or admirable...all related in a wry, thoughtful, observational and faithful way. Michael is a favorite read of mine. Not just me, either. "Did you read Michael?" is a common question in our house (note: "Yes" is usually the answer).
Michael and I intersect in interesting ways. He attended the University of North Texas (then North Texas State) about the same time my wife did, and it's the school my daughter now attends. His wife is a singer, as is mine. Other things. We also met last summer in San Antonio and had dinner, and I believe I wrote something at the time along the lines of "It would be hard to find a better dinner companion." It was true.
Michael's also currently out of the Internet loop, on his annual trek to Ohio, so his readers are going to have a little withdrawal here for a week. Still, he left me this story, about another discovery, and Denny.
The Fathers' Gifts
By Michael Main
I do not know you, Denny.
I have your Bible. I know it's yours because your name is embossed on the cover.
It's the King James Bible, and affixed in the center of the front and back covers are stickers...for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
I don't know why.
A friend found the Bible last night protruding from a small white box, inside a garbage bag discarded on the edge of our church parking lot.
I do not know you, Denny.
I know you haven't had this Bible for very long. The binding is unbent and inside there is an inscription dated June 4, 2003.
The inscription reads in part, "I want you to have this Bible. I want you to know I love you with all my heart."
It's signed "Dad."
I do not know you Denny.
I don't know if you are hurting or believe you have a good reason to reject this gift.
I do not know you, Denny.
I'm going to hold onto your Bible in case you change your mind.
I will keep it inside that same little white box. The one marked, Handle with Care.
I would like to know you, Denny.
Please feel free to come inside my Father's House.
We will handle you with care too, I promise.
PSALM 66:20
Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!
