Happy Days

Hey.  Just thought I'd check in.

I should note that for any of you considering taking a trip to Seattle someday and wanting to leave your umbrella at home, this is the time to do it, late July and August.  Our weather is insurable this time of year.  In fact, if you want to plan a picnic, do it on July 26.  I've spent 21 July 26ths up here and have never seen a cloud.  Not a wisp.  But you're pretty safe until September.

This July 26 was no different.  It was warm, 85 or so, and there was a brilliant blue sky.  So you wanna know what I did on my birthday?

I went to Costco.  It was fun.  I bought a year's supply of Splenda for 20 bucks.  Also 2 liters of lemon juice for $4 (combine the lemon juice with Splenda and water and you get some nice, non-caloric lemonade).

What else?  Hmm.  Cereal.  Bagels.  Two new phones.  A roasted chicken.

I also spent 10 minutes staring at a DVD recorder.  I'm getting antsy about transferring all our home movies off VHS before they disintegrate (which, of course, we were told would happen in 8-10 years, and some of these are 21 years old and still in fine shape, but you don't mess around with posterity), but I don't know much about the technology and Costco, as great as it is, does not have salespeople to explain and try to get you to buy an extended warranty.  So I passed for the time being.

Then we went home, turned on the fans, and ordered pizza.  I rented "Lost in America," because I wanted to laugh and Albert Brooks always does the trick, but then John found Beth's DVD of "The Princess Bride," and since we've talked about that movie a bit here on this blog lately it seemed a good fit, and it was.

And I talked with my brother, my daughter, and my mother, who mysteriously thought I was John when I answered the phone, and then attributed that (also mysteriously) to the fact that I am getting older.  She also had some philosophy for me.

"I guess at your age you really don't want any more birthdays."

"Actually, Mom, I'm sorta hoping I have a 48th, you know?"

It was a good day.

We also managed to finalize our annual "boys" summer trip.  In three weeks we're heading for Whidbey Island, a short ferry ride from my house, where we'll stay in rustic settings and walk around Port Orchard and sit on the back deck of our cottage, overlooking the lagoon, and lie about stuff.  I'll post pictures.

Finally, as I've noted before, my wife refused to marry me until I was 25, so tomorrow is our 22nd wedding anniversary.  It, too, will be a lovely day, I'm sure, although I think we'll pass on Costco and just go out to dinner or something.

John and I actually dug out a video from that summer, 1983, a couple of weeks ago.  It's the dinner theater production Julie and I were in.  He thought it was hilarious, mom and dad, singing and dancing, so young, so thin, so damn beautiful it would break your heart.  That one needs to head for DVD land soon, too.

So have a nice weekend, all.  I'll be back.  Linea, enjoy your vacation.  Meg, I hope camp is fun.  Michael, glad you have your love back home.  Gordon, I hope you had a nice trip to Houston, if such a thing is possible.  Jeremy, good luck with the book.  Hugh, love the scans.  Janet, enjoy your childless house for the time being.

And happy anniversary to us.  It doesn't seem like yesterday, not 22 years, but simply a lot of yesterdays, mostly good, some not so good, and all of them I would re-live in a second as long as we could do it together again.
