Epiphany

At some point in one's life, or sometimes at more than one point, something happens that is life-changing and profound.  For some, it's marriage, or becoming a parent or discovering a hidden talent or an untested strength.  For me, it is buying a portable dishwasher.

This is the coolest thing EVER.  I just stick the dirty dishes in it and, when it is full, I hook it up to the sink and then, after awhile, I put away clean, dry dishes.  Amazing.  Simply awe-inspiring.

Why didn't I buy one um, ten or so years ago?

The Gates

Kevin and I have always been Christo fans and Jack, as far as he knows, has always been one, too, so the 3 of us are heading to NYC on Saturday morning for a meander through and around Central Park.  We're also hoping to go to the newly refurbished and spiffy Modern and maybe to catch a Steinberg show at a gallery while we're there.  We are definitely planning to head downtown to TriBeCa for lunch or an early supper at our favorite restaurant in New York, Walker's.  Yum.  AND we get to hang out with Hip Young Chick Reena and her Charming Vic.  Lots of fun in 24 hours.

Kevin's friend from work and former Veterinary Assistant, Lainie, will take care of Syd.  Syd LOVES Lainie and so won't notice that we are gone.

I will definitely miss the dishwasher.

The Party

Well, Baby Jack is now officially ONE.  WooHoo!  He does not, we discovered, like frosting.  This is my fault, since I have so cautiously kept any sort of sugar- or fat-saturated food from him his whole life (while simultaneously stuffing my own mouth with as many cookies as it can hold.)  Oh well.

When the graduates from our New Babies/New Moms class came on Friday, the Moms all looked fantastic and the babies are super super cute.  And very very funny.  At this age, they don't really play together; they sort of inhabit the same space and play independently.  Sometimes they take notice of each other, and they look rather surprised.  Pleasantly surprised, but definitely surprised.

Inventory

At his 12-month check-up, Jack weighed 25 pounds, 11 ounces and is 30 inches tall.  He has FOUR teeth (2 came in on his birthday.)  He is meeting all of the developmental milestones (although I couldn't get the pediatrician to say what is very clear to me, which is that Jack is, of course, quite advanced.)  Things are good with my about-to-be toddler.

Now the car seat can get turned around (as soon as I can unhook it from the stupid LATCH system) and we are doing away with bottles and formula and baby food.  Wow.

Job Update

I went into Children's last Thursday and worked with the night staff there and found that the staffing is adequate and I could manage the workload.  They made me an offer which is less than I am making now, so my recruiter is working on that.  Some things happened at work this weekend that are really making me want to leave as soon as possible... so, I hope that I can negotiate and make the change.  If I do leave, the first few weeks will be kind of tough: I will need to work Monday through Friday from 7AM-3PM and I'm not sure what I'm going to do about childcare on Wednesdays, when Rama cares for another little boy.  I have a possible solution worked out: I'll see if I can work 10 hours per day (7AM-5PM) Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for the first two weeks and then go to 12 hour night shifts after that.  Yes, my hours will be the same, because that is what works the best for Jack and me right now.  It's not working so well for Kevin and me, except that, since we never see each other, we appreciate each other much more when we do.  Thank God we had such a long *courtship* so that we have something to look back on!  Like times that we actually took vacations and laid in bed on Sundays until noon reading the Globe and the Times.  Sigh.  Well, I guess that we can do that again when we get to whatever retirement home Jack puts us in....

OK, I'm off to load the dishwasher!  I need to name Her.  She rocks.  Maybe I'll call her Diva.
