Thanks to Anita and to Lauren for writing to tell me that there are VERY few hospitals that accept donations of cord blood.  Anita left the correct URL for cord blood donations:

http://www.marrow.org/cgi-bin/NETWORK/nmdp_cord_blood_hospitals.pl

I cannot BELIEVE that Massachusetts, with its medical megalopolis and 3 medical schools and a bazillion biotech firms doesn't have one cord blood donation center.  I hope to do something about this, although I'm not entirely sure how.  I'll start by writing a few letters and making a few calls and will keep you updated on my success or lack therof.  If anyone has any ideas of where I should start, let me know.  I was going to start with the state and the CEO of Partners Healthcare, which owns Mass General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital and accounts for about 40,000 live births each year.  That's a boatload of cord blood that people shouldn't be throwing away.

Thanks for your thoughts.

More Jack later.
