When I’m Sixty-Four (or so)

By Dixie Darr

"Life is like a ten speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use."
Charles M. Schulz

Meet Corinne, an energetic woman who, I would guess, has passed her 80th birthday. I visited her the other day at the senior high rise apartment building where she lives. It took me four days to find her at home.

Corinne still pursues her longtime interest in history, volunteering one day a week at the Colorado Historical Society. An author of books on historical sites in Denver, including the Elitch Gardens Story and the Brown Palace Story, she used to lead tours of that legendary hotel. Now she's busy organizing group tours of other historical sites. During my visit, she showed me pictures she'd taken of a Cherry Creek punt boat ride from Larimer Street to the site of Denver's founding at Confluence Park. Another set of photos was from a bus tour to a mining museum in Colorado Springs. "I can't afford the trip I'd really like to take, to Spain," she explained, "so I'm taking all the day trips I can find around here."

I wish I were in a position to give her that trip to Spain, but meanwhile, I appreciate her positive attitude. She'll write about her day trips for the apartment building newsletter she publishes, another volunteer job. And she'll probably submit the articles to other publications she freelances for.

Before I left, she took me upstairs to see the library she had just finished organizing for her neighbors in the building. Then she didn't exactly hustle me out of there, but I got the impression that she had places to go, people to see and things to do.

That's the kind of old lady I want to be. What kind of old lady do you want to be?
