Getting to NO You

By Dixie Darr

"I feel like I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe."

Steven Wright

Morning kitchens. They're the latest thing in the mini-mansions favored by today's yuppies. Connected to the master bedroom, they contain a small refrigerator, microwave oven, coffeemaker, and sink. Homeowners like them because they don't have to go "all the way to the kitchen" to get their morning coffee. Here's what I think: if it's that far from the bedroom to the kitchen, get a smaller house.

My sister-in-law thinks it's just another sign of fragmenting the family and reports hearing another recommendation that parents add stackable washer/dryer sets in each child's room. We seem to be doing anything and everything we can think of to keep family members from actually communicating with one another.

I remember once seeing a family compound in a decorating magazine. In addition to the main house were three smaller houses, each containing a combined bedroom/sitting room with a small, attached kitchen and a bathroom. The two teenaged children each had his/her own house and the third one was reserved for guests. Maybe it's time to give up the outdated idea of a single-family house and embrace the single-family apartment building.
