My Advent Diary 2

By Dixie Darr

Tonight is Bell Choir practice. This is the fifth week of my participation in this group and we’ve already had one performance, in which I screwed up a couple of times, but nobody seemed to notice. Maralyn pointed out that our congregation is always very appreciative of any kind of special music and never notices when it isn’t perfect. After that performance, one woman asked me how long the bell choir had been playing. “I don’t know about the others,” I told her, “but I’ve been doing it three weeks.” She was amazed, which made me feel very good.

I joined the group because I have always loved Christmas programs, but never had the opportunity to participate in one before. This year, my classes were cancelled, giving me Tuesday nights free. A cloud with a silver lining. I don’t know what made me think that playing bells would be easy—it isn’t, but it is fun and they sound great even when we mess them up, which is pretty much always. Marion, our leader, has infinite patience with us, probably acquired while she was raising eleven children.

Saturday, I’m going to attend a Christmas program put on by the bell choirs of six local churches. That should be glorious.
