My Advent Diary 4

By Dixie Darr

My Christmas shopping is almost finished. Like the last couple of years, I ordered almost everything online and did it early to allow time for shipping. I’m looking forward to a more relaxed holiday this year, which means simplifying my plans—not an easy task for me. I’ve never really believed that less is more.

I want to spend a little time learning to play at least one Christmas carol on the little electronic keyboard I bought a couple of years ago. Just like playing in the bell choir, I thought learning to play the keyboard would be easy. I was wrong. I read somewhere that playing a musical instrument was a very common “fantasy hobby.” Lots of people want to learn, but relatively few people actually follow through on their desire.

Music is my favorite part of the season and I love all the old standards. It really annoys me to go to a Christmas program where I don’t recognize a single song. What Child is This is my favorite carol, followed by Joy to the World. I love singing Silent Night during our Christmas Eve service, when all the lights are turned off and the congregation lights individual candles. This year, I won’t get a candle because I’ll be playing with the bell choir. It’s the first time I’ve participated in a Christmas program since junior high school. Joy, indeed.
