Back to Reality

By Dixie Darr

"Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can."

Arthur Ashe

Okay. I’m officially bored with the holidays. There’s nothing but reruns on TV, forcing me to work on the list of projects I’ve been procrastinating for years. Today, I’m going to convert my unused back bedroom into a dressing room, a task that entails sorting through boxes full of old papers, currently stored there, and making decisions about what to throw away and what to keep. Organization is not exactly my idea of fun.

I’m making soup with the last of my Christmas ham, using beans from The Women’s Bean Project, my favorite local charity. My freezer has now been purged of all traces of ham and turkey. It may be time to finally clean out all the food I’ve saved there and can no longer identify. All this housework is making me eager to get back to work, which I do Friday night. Hurray! We don’t usually teach classes on Friday night, but the holidays have thrown us off schedule. Unfortunately, it conflicts with the only other event I’ve been looking forward to this week: the Happy Hour Bible Study at Shorter Community AME Church.  We didn’t meet last Friday because people were too busy to study the Bible the day after Christmas, a fact I find elegant in its irony.

As you may have guessed, I don’t celebrate on New Year’s Eve. The last thing I want to do is be out on the road (or anywhere else) with a bunch of drunks. If my neighbors didn’t have the barbaric habit of shooting guns out their front doors at midnight, I’d sleep right through it. I rely on them to wake me up, so I can wish my cat a Happy New Year, roll over, and go back to sleep.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to formulate my goals for 2004 and focus on the Kwanzaa principle for today: Purpose. My purpose today is to clear out more clutter and make room for all the wonderful new things that are sure to come my way.
