About the title
One day my job as a social worker had me sitting in a courtroom waiting for my client's case to come up on the docket. Another case was being heard-- some ordinary thing, domestic violence or vandalism I think it was-- a car window that was broken during an argument. A young woman was prosecuting, and she was questioning the defendant, a young African-American man, when, much to my surprise, she asked him, "Do you know the difference between the truth and a lie?"
"Yes," he answered.
Her next question was, "What happens when you tell a lie?"
After a pause, he responded, "Uh, nothing."
