Veggie Let Down
For the past couple of weeks, I've been very disappointed in the CSA produce.
Last week there were a lot of beautiful, bright-red jalapeno peppers, but only a few tomatoes, a couple of potatoes, some just-OK onions. Plus there was a big bag of gnarly so-called Jerusalem artichokes (also known as sunchokes), which I just couldn't make myself eat.
The week before, it was mostly winter squash, some good tomaotes, a big bag of past-its-prime basil and a handful of sorry-looking peaches that tasted even worse.
And this week, there weren't even any tomatoes. I got another big bag of those nasty "sunchokes," one tiny head of hard-looking cabbage, a couple of handfuls of okra, some wilted arugula, a little sprig of thyme, two potatoes, an onion, and two yellow-and-green zucchini squash.
A friend of mine told me she stopped doing the CSA thing because she came to the conclusion that the pick of the crop was going to the restaurants. And to the farmer's market, where people buy what looks good and don't have to settle for whatever shows up.
I hate to say it, but I think she's right.
The early tomotoes were fabulous. And so were those gorgeous eggplants.
But I'm not signing up again next year.
It's sad.
I paid good money up front, and I don't think it's worth it.
I'll go to the farmer's market instead. But if I see this guy's stuff, I won't buy it, no matter how good it looks, because I feel like I've been ripped off.
Note to farmers: Don't piss off your customers.
