weightless

I really wanted to be  an astronaut when I was a kid.  What could be cooler than blasting through outer space in a rocket?  What could be cooler than floating weightless among the stars?

Then one day I had an inspiration for becoming an astronaut.  From reading books I knew that outer space had no air.  And I knew that outer space is where you were weightless and could float around like magic.  So I figured the air is what gave you your weight.  From there it was easy to figure out how to become weightless and float on Earth.  I took my family vacuum cleaner and taped up the vent where the sucked up air blew out.  With the vent taped up, all the air in my house would go into the vacuum cleaner.  When there was no air, there would be no gravity and I would float away like an astronaut.

I taped up my vacuum good with scotch tape.  When I turned on the vacuum, the scotch tape just blew off the vent.  So I taped up the vent even better.  Still the tape just blew off when I turned on the vacuum.  Finally, I just held the tape in place when I turned on the vacuum.  I let the vacuum run for a long time sucking up all the air in my house.  But I never became weightless and I never floated magically through the air.

I never became an astronaut either.

rich and famous

Sometimes I would tell people about my dream to be rich and famous.  I would always expect them to tell me that was their ultimate goal to.  I mean, doesn't everyone want to the most awesome type of human being there is?

But to my surprise people would tell me they didn't want to be rich and famous.  They said something about what a hollow and phony type of life.  They said something about how a good life was about having good friends and spending time with the people you really love and care about.

I would kind of nod at what these people said, but I thought they were nuts.

success

When I  was a teenager I had some very high expectations about life and success.  I would look at ordinary looking people with ordinary jobs in their thirties and wonder what they had to live for.  I mean if you weren't rich and famous by then, why wouldn't you just kill yourself?

Now that I'm thirty-three, I still don't know the answer to that question.
