I have this friend of mine that never says no to a favor.
"Sure, just give me a call a little bit later," he says.
But sometimes when its time to do the favor my friend just doesn't answer the phone. I'll call two or three times and he just doesn't pick-up.
Sometimes you can trick him by calling him from a different number. But other times he still somehow knows its you and he still doesn't pick up. If you keep calling him and calling him, eventually the phone will go straight to voice mail like he's turned it off.
Sometimes I'll be hanging around this friend and his phone will be ringing constantly. He'll look at the caller ID and say,
"shit, this is my dad's friend. I told him I'd help him out this morning, but I just don't feel like doing that now."
Then the next time his phone rings he'll look at it and say, "this is a weird number. I don't like this number, I'm not gonna answer it."
I'm not sure why, but people are always asking this friend of mine to do lots of favors. A lot of times he does the favors, but a lot of times he just doesn't answer the phone when it comes time to do the favor.
After the times that this friend says he'll do me a favor, but then doesn't answer the phone, I'll get really steamed at him.
Just wait till he needs a favor, I think. Then I'll show him how it feels. I'll imagine myself becoming really rich and famous and then blowing him off at some big party or at some critical, career boosting moment. How do you feel now? I think.
But weeks and months go by and my friend never asks me for any favors and I never get rich or famous. Pretty soon I start thinking about a favor I could use from this friend of mine again. I can't be too mad at him, I'll think. Afterall, I still owe him some money and it seems like so many people ask him for favors. Eventually I break down and call and ask my friend another favor.
"Sure, he'll say. Just give me a call a little later."
