test run

A picture named duhwithcar.jpgThis is a test run of my latest banner, hung here at US 19 and 54th Ave North in St. Pete.  It measures 4' high by 20' long.  The font is called Space Cowboy.

Whitney helped me hang it this morning.  The lot is a car rental business that was closed on Sunday.  Once we had the banner up we skated around on the parking lot and took some pictures.  But the lot wasn't a great skating surface and Whitney took a pretty hard spill and got some serious gravel marks in her forearm.

A picture named meandduh.jpgCreating this sign brought up some classic "Mark Michaels" situations.  Since my warehouse access was denied (ahem, ahem) I decided to forge ahead and draw up the banner at my house.  But I immediately ran into a snag when I discovered  I couldn't pull the projector far back enough from the banner to make the letters their proper size.  There just wasn't enought distance between the back of my house and the garage apt. behind me.

But I was sick of this project dragging on and on and I wanted progress.  Then I got the idea that I might be able to find a building downtown with an electrical outlet for the projector and a flat wall to hang the banner on.

A picture named meandduhclose.jpgThe Globe Coffee Lounge came to mind as I was driving around looking for a suitable spot.  It is bordered by an alley with large flat walls, and the owner, Jo Ellen Schilke, would likely be sympathetic to a nutty cause like a giant duh sign.

Jo Ellen agreed to let me tap her power and work behind her coffee house, but there were other forces and obstacles to contend with.  First of all it was extremely windy and cold.  I soon put myself in the comical predicament of trying to hang a giant "wind sail" on a wall with duct tape in the midst of 25 mph hour gusts.  Just when I was almost done taping the plastic material to the wall, a big gust would rip through the alley and the whole thing  would fly off.  I kept screaming and cursing at the wind and the banner.  And then these punk rock kids from the coffee house kept stopping to look and see what the hell was going on.

In the meantime, my little girl was home alone a few blocks away as her dad was  feverishly trying to complete another "important project" to make himself famous.
