the magical, drifting, styrofoam rafts
When I was about ten years old, me and my friend Jay Dipoala were playing at this bayside park when we found these two enormous chunks of styrofoam. They must have been two feet thick and eight to ten feet square. They were just lying on the muddy shore like they had blown off some frieght liner in the shipping lanes.
Jay and I knew just what to do with them. We turned them into Huckleberry Finn style rafts. We found some long sticks to steer and push us through the shallow bay waters.
We spent that whole day navigating the coastal waters around south St. Petersburg. It was one of those magical, childhood situations.
When the sun started to set we hid our giant styrofoam rafts behind some mangroves, so they would be waiting for our next adventure.
But the next time we came out to that waterside park our rafts were gone. For all I know there could be kids from Brazil playing on them right now.
