to have and to hold

Tonight the Publix cashier girl actually asked me whether I wanted my Hershey bar in the bag or to hold separately--like I was some sort of kid that can't wait till he gets home to have his candy.

and now

....here's Mark Michaels' enviro-friendly way to clean blue jeans, without using detergents, washing machines, fabric softeners, etc.

First: wear jeans until they feel dirty.

Second: discard jeans on the floor of your bedroom into a nicely, crumpled heap.

Third: wait about 48-72 hours and pick jeans up again and sniff them.

Fourth: tell yourself that the jeans smell "alright" and then wear them again.

Five: repeat as necessary.

it wasn't in the stars

I keep (vainly) trying to find things to do with myself at night besides getting fucked-up.  At some point the idea of going to a planetarium popped into my head, as a stimulating and educational alternative.  To my surprise, Rachel brought the idea up again tonight.    So I got on my computer to see what's become of the Bishop Planetarium in Bradenton, where I have many great memories as a kid.

Unfortunately, according to the web site, the Bishop Planetarium has burned to the ground and will be out of commission for some time.  The web site suggested going to the MOSI Planetarium in Tampa as an alternative.

But, according to the MOSI web site, its planetarium is in need of major renovations and repairs, and going there tonight is just not, well, in the stars.

So Rachel and I have resorted to a night at the Derby Lane dog tracks, where drinks are cheap and greyhounds are hopped up on amphetamines and everyone's a winner except the betters.

(Its also interesting to note, that the (Southern Florida) museum can't afford to reopen the observatory, which was also destroyed by fire, because making it compliant with the Americans with disabilites act will cost well over a million dollars.  In fact, when you read this on the site, there's a tone to it that sounds like--now are you happy, you nazi-cripples!?)
