using my education
My high school Spanish teacher would have been proud of me yesterday. I used that tongue in the course of my work to get ahead.
I knocked on the door of this really nice looking house, that looked like it needed lots of expensive treework.
A maid answered the door, and when I tried to ask if the owner was home she said,
"No speak English,"
I almost turned and walked away from a good money opportunity, when suddenly I thought: wait a minute! I studied Spanish for years and years in school. I should be able to handle this.
So I said, "Um....tiene....el numero.....de telephono....de....el hombre.....de casa."
"Si! Si," said the maid, "un momento."
She disappeared, and then came back to the door a moment later with an index card with the owner's office and cell phone numbers on it, given to her for emergencies only, no doubt.
I peered through the screen door and scribbled down the numbers and the owners name.
"Um....Gracias," I said.
"De nada," she said.
I always imagined that you might use Spanish for purposes of glamorous overseas travel, or international finance. But if I can use it to trick phone numbers out of unsuspecting maids, then that's good enough.
