first grade memory....

I was trying to buy a pickle, or maybe a pretzel from the snack bar of a roller skating rink called "Gay Blades" (back before "gay" meant "gay."  Or maybe it was starting to mean that back then, but there were still holdover names from when "gay" didn't mean "gay.")

Anyway, I was trying to buy this pickel or pretzel, but the problem was I had a disagreement with the snack bar cashier about whether the coin in my hand was a nickel or a quarter.

She said it was a nickel.  I said it was a quarter.

If the coin in my hand was a quarter, then I would get the pickel (or the pretzel).

If it was a nickel, I wouldn't get anything.

I told the snack bar lady that I had just learned about coins in first grade, and I tried to show her that the pictures on the coin in my hand meant it was a quarter.

I didn't get  a pickle or a pretzel.
