house hunting
I went scouting for possible homes to buy today and discovered a couple of interesting things:
*At one charming little 3 bedroom I was surprised to find two paintings that I did about 3 or 4 years ago. This is statistically pretty amazing since I've only sold about a half-dozen paintings in my life. (You can see one of the paintings if you click on the link to the left that says "the making of the legend." That particular painting I sold standing on the side of the road, jobless, and pretty much penniless).
For some reason I felt like finding my paintings there made it somehow possible to buy the place with its gleaming, hardwood floors and brand new appliances. But it was way out of my price range, in fact....
*The other amazing thing I discovered is that even crappy homes cost more than $200,000 these days. I mean, I started in B grade neighborhoods, and then kept lowering my standards and lowering my standards, until at last I was pretty much standing underneath the interstate, in a neighborhood with rusty pick-ups on the lawn.
Well, maybe I could learn to like a street like this, I thought.
Then I took the info sheet for the very modest looking house for sale. Price: $275 thousand.
*Ironically I made the most I've ever made today on a one day sales commission (for tree trimming): $900. But suck-ronically, my landlord will be taking that exact amout on monday, leaving me back with a net worth of, I don't know, ninety bucks.
