I know this is a couple of days late. I just can't help myself. 9:27:24 PM | Tom Friedman's anti-France rant in the Times made me so angry I had to write something. Had to rant myself! He says France is our enemy and that if they weren't they would be filing behind Bush's proposal to the UN with no questions asked. He also says we've had a "military victory" in Iraq. (Ironically, he said this the same day Max Cleland compared Iraq to Vietnam.) Friedman says more, of course. Feel free to read it. I can't help but wonder if he's been blinded by his years in Israel and now thinks daily assassinations, bombings, and back-and-forth hostility are normal and signs of "victory." Because that's what Iraq has right now. Here in New Orleans, where there are murders nearly every day (and some days more than one), we've not gotten used to the violence. We still find it reprehensible. Perhaps Friedman needs to pay us a visit to be reminded that we should strive, always, to have "normality" defined by something other than violent death and the grief that follows. I know. We can never be free of violence and loss. But to work toward minimizing it is a noble, human, pursuit. Sorry for the rant, everyone. Couldn't keep my trap shut on that one. |
